TRADITIONAL KITCHEN IDEAS
Traditional kitchens should not be confused with country or farmhouse kitchens. They have some similarities but are quite different in a lot of other aspects. Traditional kitchens are much more family oriented and give out a vibe that is totally in contrast to the country kitchens. The overall décor would also be different between the two types of kitchens. Traditional kitchens are more relaxed in their overall color and appearance as opposed to the country kitchens which usually have bright colors matching their environment. While planning a traditional kitchen, we should keep in mind the period that we are trying to realize and that verisimilitude can only be achieved if all the elements of the kitchen falls into sync and emerge as one unit.
REMOVE SIGNS OF MODERNITY:
Its important while planning for a traditional kitchen that the décor is totally blending in with the overall essence of the kitchen. Any furniture or wall hangings that do not look like belonging to a bygone period, should be avoided in all cases. The main feature of modern times and as an extension, of the modern kitchen, is the subtleness of the décor. Smoothly finished chairs, stainless steel countertops etc. are predominant features in a modern kitchen. Their presence in a traditional kitchen should be avoided at all costs. The furniture should be much more ornamental with large comfy chairs and spacious island. Any and all elements not belonging to a said period should be discarded.
Floors can add a very genuine traditional characteristic to the space. Using random wooden patterns or irregular stones like limestone can provide a rugged look. We can also use dark color stones like slate to provide a more pleasing look. Regularly spaced tiles should be avoided.
ABUNDANCE OF OPENINGS:
When it comes to traditional kitchens a lot of openings are necessary. This is what we have always seen in original traditional kitchens, and this is what we should encompass in our kitchens when we are aiming for a traditional look. Bay windows are also required to get the authentic mood. A small breakfast table with bench chairs on two sides can be placed by the bay window. The doors should also be preferably large double paneled ones with broad frames.
GETTING THE COLORS RIGHT:
The colors to be used in a traditional kitchens should be subdued shades of yellow, black and white. The cabinets can be made extra large in cream and different shades of yellow can be applied on various wooden elements. The fabric used including the cushion covers for chairs and curtains should also be in light shades of cream or yellow to blend in. An organic look has to be maintained inside traditional kitchens and choosing the right colors goes a long way in ensuring that.
Traditional kitchens are pretty expensive to set up and cannot be really developed in space constrained rooms. But the beauty and character that it imparts is so peerless that if resources are not scarce one should definitely go for it.
