RUSTIC KITCHEN IDEAS
There is something extremely charming about a country kitchen which we find in farmhouses or country inns. They have that rustic old look which reflects years of experience and expertise. But rustic kitchens doesn’t always mean a hay strewn space with hens pecking around. Rustic kitchens can also be made extremely chic and swanky, but still retain that country innocence that makes them so attractive in the first place. When it comes to a rustic kitchen décor, we can rarely go wrong. Just keep in mind some small details regarding the colors and the furniture and you invariably end up with an extremely nostalgia inducing country kitchen.
GETTING THE DETAILS RIGHT:
As already mentioned, getting a few details right goes a long way in ensuring an authentic feel to the rustic kitchen. The usual stainless steel vent can be replaced with a barn-wood covered one, which will look extremely appealing. In the same manner we could either go for a wood paneled roofing or provide an artificial ceiling of bare panel wood. This, when combined with an extra big plain white sink, we can get a country inn vibe.
COLORING IT THE COUNTRY WAY:
Of course, the colors that we choose for the cabinets and counters can determine how authentic the entire set up feels. The best combination is always a dusty grey for the cabinets and a hay yellow for the counters. While planning for the colors for a country style kitchen, it’s always better to try and blend the color with the surrounding. If it’s an area with ample sunlight, going in with a general golden hue is the right choice to make. On the other hand if it’s a mountainous region, going in for white and grey to match the rugged snow-kissed environment will be the right choice.
USING SALVAGED ITEMS:
Using salvaged items instead of new and shiny stuff, brings an age appropriate look to the kitchen. The salvaged items can range anything from old baskets to place fruits or old tables to be used as the island. Using old panels for kitchen and door frames also serve the purpose.
PUTTING UP MARKED UP SIGNS:
Putting up signs like “ GROCERY” or “ EGGS” on the walls on wooden boards gives the kitchen an old farmhouse storage look. Accompany this with appropriate utensils and the entire feel is achieved.
USING OPEN SHELVES:
Use of open shelves in place of cabinets should be preferred. Add to this a lot of glass ware on the open shelves, and bar stools on the island, and we get the countryside bar look. The bar stools could be covered with salvaged old shirts or flannel. If modern appliances are in use, it’s always better to get a blending color or to put them out of plain sight.
Rustic kitchens can be a very attractive option to explore while planning a new kitchen, but we should have an eye for the authentic rustic charm in order to achieve that verisimilitude.
