HOW TO CHOOSE KITCHEN PENDANT LIGHTING
Lighting up a kitchen is an extremely tricky business. One should be careful not to install extremely bright lights which might also heat up the space, but at the same time it should not be so dimly lit that the functionality of the kitchen is compromised. The pendant lights are especially important in that case because they hang over the island. The island is always the center of the universe when it comes to the kitchen. Its not just a functional space, but also a space where we gather to sit down and share our day. It needs to be appropriately lit at all times befitting of its significance.
The first major hurdle in getting the pendant lights right is their positioning. The lights should be positioned as such that they are not too high as to mistake them to be look-down lights but at the same time should not be hanging too low. Low hanging lights can sometimes make movement across the island difficult and also hamper our view across the island. Usually a pendant light can be hung at a height of about 30 inches from the surface of the island.
FUNCTIONALITY AND BEAUTY:
The pendant lights are no doubt always aiming to be the best decorative features of the kitchen. But care should be taken to make sure that in seeking beauty we don’t end up ignoring the functionality. They should also be capable of lighting up the island efficiently but at the same time look like a million bucks. Using drum lights with steel casing, or linear lights with continuous suspension are good choices to check out.
POSITIONING AND SPACING:
The positioning of the pendant lights are also important factors that play a vital role in bringing out the true aesthetics of the lights. They should be placed in such a manner that the entire surface of the island is well lit but at the same it should not appear as if the lights are fighting for scarce space in the air. Three or four lights at equally spaced intervals are the best choice if they are well lit ones. Continuous suspension lights can be used in case of confusion regarding the placement of individual pendant lights.
PURPOSE OF THE LIGHTS:
Pendant lights can be of four types based on their purpose: task, ambient, accent and decorative. The particular purpose will determine the type of pendant light to be used. If they are to be used as task lights they have to be bright ones with downward illumination. On the other hand if they are just to create an ambience, a series of soft dimly lit lights are more effective. In case of accent lights, which are used to highlight some particular piece of art or décor, a picture light will work best. At the same time for decorative purposes some unabashedly eye catching lights can be used.
Pendant lighting should always merge in with the rest of the lighting and the general mood of the room. But they are without doubt the main attraction. Knowing the exact purpose and function can aid us in making an informed choice while trying to bejewel our kitchens with pendant lights.
